Electric Scooters: How Fast, How Far?

Over the years, electric scooters have come a log way. Whether you need transportation to work or you just want to take a short trip to the store; today’s electric scooters will get you there within a flash.

When you are deciding on which of the many types of electric scooters to purchase, you need to take into consideration a few important factors. How far you will need to go on you electric scooter, and How fast you want to go on your electric scooter.

Speed: Whether you are purchasing online, or at a retail establishment, you need to take into consideration the following: The maximum speed that this advertised for electric scooters is based on averages. The actual speed that you will get on your electric scooter will depend on a few factors.

1. Carrying Capacity – this is the maximum weight that the scooter will hold while traveling down a smooth, flat surface. When a customer asks, “will it hold me?”, I will inform them of the manufacturers listed maximum weight, and I will also tell them that based on my experience, the particular model of electric scooters that they are interested in will actually carry x lbs comfortably. For example: If the maximum weight as reported by the manufacturer is 350 lbs, I would tell the customer that the manufacturer says that it can carry up to 350 lbs, but I would say more like 280-300lbs. And explain that the more weight, the more it will affect the overall performance.

2. Terrain – The actual speed that electric scooters are able to obtain is also based on terrain. The type of roads, the road conditions, whether there are hills or not as well as how steep those hills are. As the grade of incline increases, all electric scooters will decrease in maximum speed. Running your scooter through soft dirt or sand, not recommended, will decrease you overall speed. When you are riding and there is a strong breeze, you will be sure to loose speed while taking your electric scooter against the wind.

When you consider the actual weight, and the terrain that you will be using your electric scooter, you will be able to better judge the actual speed you will be able to obtain.

Distance: If you go by the manufacturers stated maximum distance, you will be in for a shock. These distance statements are based on average rider weight, as well as optimum riding conditions, as well as proper throttle use. The latter, no one explains.

When considering the actual distance for electric scooters, you need to take into consideration the above mentioned variables for speed, as well as one important factor that no one ever tells you about. When a customer inquires about the distance of the electric scooters, I will tell them that the manufacturers max range is X, but I would say more like, X. For example: If the manufacturers description is a max range of 30 miles, I would inform the customer about the variables, and tell them to expect 20-30 miles. We do not want to give any false impressions. One of the most important variables to consider when determining the distance electric scooters will go is know as throttle control.

1. Throttle Control – What is throttle control? When you are riding your electric scooter, your instinct will be to turn or push the throttle all the way. The longer you have this pushed all the way, the more power you will have and the more power, the faster you will go. Keep in mind that when you have the throttle all the way, that will drain the batteries a lot quicker than by using proper throttle control.

1a. When riding your electric scooter, get up to speed first, then let off on the throttle and coast. You don’t have to be going max out all the time. Use the throttle to speed up, coast, then speed up again. You can easily double the distance with your electric scooter by practicing proper throttle control.

Utilizing these tips, you will be able to make an informed decision. When purchasing an electric scooter, think of it as an investment, and if you have questions, do not hesitate to pick up the phone and call.
